Calling vs a Vocation

June 17, 2021

When I was 12 years old, I discovered that I liked electricity. Not from the perspective of playing with it like a toy, but I had a insatiable curiosity with electrons. I read everything I could get my hands on. I took most of the electrical appliances in our house apart just to see how they worked. Most of the time I could never put them back together so they worked again , but I had fun taking them apart. I recall during my middle school years, I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up. An electrical engineer I told them. They tried to talk me out of that goal and to accept something “easier,” according to them. That was my dream and for me it was “easier” already. They wanted to give me to choose a vocation that was different than my calling didn’t understand that engineering was the call. I’m glad that I did not listen to them and stayed true to what was meant for me. Engineering has been a great and rewarding career with no regrets. Unfortunately, I’ve  met so many people though during my journey that were not so fortunate. They were talked out of their calling and chose a vocation that someone else gave them. The doctor that should have been is now a car salesman. The “should have been” Interior Designer is now working at a local grocery store, and the “should have been president” of the United States is now driving a city bus….all exchanged their calling for a vocation that someone else chose for them.  It’s not too late, you have not missed the window of your calling if you still want to pursue it. You have a natural gift and that is your calling. True success will be experienced when both your calling and vocation are the same.
